The Little House!

The Early Stages

Remember this? In August 2001 we were given a small farm house by Colleen's aunt Sharon. The house was built 50 years ago by Colleen's great great uncle Nillie (Neil), for himself and his mother (Colleen's Great Great Grandmother Ellen). The house has a very interesting history of dwellers since then, but has not been lived in since 1989. It needed a lot of work, and we took it on as a big project!

The First Dwellers

The lady on the left is Colleen's great great grandmother Mrs. Ellen Devoe who the house was first built for. The other women are Sarah-Liza and Christie who are both Colleen's Great Grandmothers. This is an amazing photo because it represents both sides of Colleen's family even before her parents met!

Re-construction

We had to disassemble the roof of the house and move the building from its original location (to our own property). Gary and Sandra came to Cape Breton to help with the roof raising. It was exciting to see that this little house was going to be a reality for us!

Working on the Outside

Once the Tyvek was done we could start cutting, painting and affixing trim around the windows, doors and at the corners of the house. It was at this point that all the windows were permanently installed.

De-constructing Inside

With this view how could we not put in a picture window? We did some work deconstructing this wall and opening up the inside a bit from the original floor plan.

Cutting the Pine

At the same time as we were finishing the exterior, we were preparing materials and ideas for the inside. We harvested pine slabs by tobogan in the winter and then got them cut for boards for our ceilings.
Finishing the Outside

The outside of the house is hemlock clapboard siding (traditional for the Cape Breton area) treated with linseed oil. We still have a bit of trim and soffit to do in this photo. We will eventually paint the house but for now we are enjoying the natural wood color.
